According to a recent report from Statistics Korea, the number of births in Korea fell nearly 9 percent on year, amounting to fewer than 28,000 in April.

This is the lowest number ever recorded since monthly records were first compiled in 1981.

Despite government investments of more than 71-billion U.S. dollars over the past decade, Korea's chronically low birthrate remains.

The January to April period marked another record low at fewer than 120,000 births.

The high cost of raising children and difficulties in finding jobs are said to be two main factors behind people's reluctance to have children.
