Dozens of helicopters, more than 800 fire engines, and over 10,000 personnel were deployed to extinguish the national-disaster-level blaze in Gangwon Province. But among them, the 88 members of the Korea Forest Service's Special Extinguishing Team have emerged as unsung heroes. This special fire brigade is highly specialized and can undertake night-time fire suppression work that ordinary firefighters cannot. Despite this, all 88 members of the team are independent contractors who are paid a mere 100,000 won per day.
