Many recent news reports have focused on the detrimental effects of plastic pollution. But now a new threat has emerged: minuscule pieces of plastic known as microplastics. The term was coined by Professor Richard Thompson in 2004 and refers to plastics that measure between one micrometer and five millimeters. According to researchers, the amount of microplastics in Earth's seas and oceans has increased exponentially. It's reached a point where humans may have worry about ingesting plastic when they eat seafood.
