After years of hesitation, New York is poised to become the first city in the US to introduce congestion charges to drive in certain areas. Though officials have not ironed out the details, they have reached a consensus that the plan was necessary to help pay for much-needed repairs to the city’s beleaguered subway system. The proceeds from congestion charges are expected to enable the city to raise billions of dollars to modernize it antiquated subway. The proposed windfall overwhelmed concerns about various other aspects of the plan.
