Japan granted the green light to researchers who want to implant human stem cells into animals to address the global shortage of human organs for transplants. Permits will now be issued to carry out the controversial research process.
Japan had previously required researchers to terminate animal embryos implanted with human cells after 14 days due to ethical concerns. But the ministry dropped the restriction after it concluded that there is technically zero risk of producing a new organism that would be part-human and part-animal.
Expect to see animal embryos with a human pancreas transplanted into the womb of a pig, which would result in the birth of a baby pig that would be killed for its human pancreas.
