Households headed by those in their 50s saw the sharpest decrease in disposable income since 2009. According to Statistics Korea, the average monthly disposable income of these households decreased by 2.4 percent in the fourth quarter last year to 4.12 million won. Disposable income is the total amount of money an individual or a household has left to save or spend after taxes and other mandatory obligations have been paid. People in their 50s account for the largest portion of the total population. With traditional employment options continuing to shrink for retirees, for many 50-something-year-olds, the future looks bleak.
