Germany's environment minister says there are plans to loosen the strict legal protections of wolves.

Amidst the rising wolf attacks on farm animals, the government wants to make it clearer whether citizens are allowed to shoot troublesome wolves. Under the new proposal, wolves can be shot if they cause 'serious agricultural damage'.

According the current law, shooting wolves is only allowed in the case of life-threatening situations. The wolf population disappeared in Germany about 100 years ago. However, they've made a comeback and over 600 roam in the northern border with Poland, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.
