Despite the recent decline in tuberculosis patients, South Korea still has the highest rate of tuberculosis among OECD member states.

Each year, 30,000 people are newly diagnosed and approximately 2,000 people die from the disease. One out of three Koreans are estimated to have latent tuberculosis, which means they can't pass along the disease to others but still have the potential to develop active tuberculosis.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the bacteria that cause tuberculosis is spread airborne when a patient coughs, speaks or sings. People nearby may breathe in the bacteria and become infected.
