A new study suggests that a poor diet is a bigger killer than smoking, accounting for around 11 million deaths annually, or 22% of the worldwide total. For perspective, smoking tobacco was associated with eight million deaths globally. Excessive consumption of sugar, salt and red meat, and under-consumption of grains, fruits and nuts are the biggest health threats. The vast majority of diet-related deaths were due to heart disease, cancer, and Type 2 diabetes. Officials suggest curbing the consumption of red meat, and excessively sweetened or salted foods.
