A common wood pigeon was found to have wintered on a Japanese island after inhabiting the South Korean island of Ulleungdo last summer. Korea's National Institute of Ecology conducted a study using a smartphone-based tracking device. The results showed that the bird flew from Ulleungdo on Sept. 20, 2017, and arrived in Okinoshima, about 280 kilometers away "as the crow flies" the very same day. The new tracking system costs just one fifth as much as a satellite system and weighs just 27 grams.
