A new report suggests that the trade battle between the U.S. and China could exacerbate deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.
After China reduced soybean purchases from the U.S. by 90 percent, it bumped up imports from Brazil to fill the gap. In turn, Brazil responded by increasing soybean production, which many fear will mean more land in the rainforest will be cleared to make room for crops.
The only thing standing in the way of this potential deforestation is a 2006 policy that limits Amazon rainforest clearing.
