Recently declassified diplomatic documents suggest that the Chun Doo-hwan government attempted to use the 1987 bombing of Korean Air Flight 858 for political means ahead of a presidential election. The released files showed the government attempted to get the North Korean agent held responsible for the bombing extradited to South Korea before an election slated for Dec. 16. Also included in the diplomatic dossier is how and why the International Olympic Committee reached out to North Korea prior to the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics.
