Black female politicians are no longer unfamiliar in the U.S. political arena, but high-ranking officials wearing dreadlocks, or African-American curly hair, has been a rare sight, even to this day. Even former First Lady Michelle Obama unveiled her original hair, curly hair, only after her husband left office.
But things seem to be changing, with an increasing number of people striving to break this bias. On April 20, the New York City Human Rights Commission issued guidelines banning discrimination against hairstyles at work or at school. Jobs and agencies that do not allow dreadlocks will be fined up to $250,000, or about 283 million won, in the future.
