Park rangers and volunteers are battling tons of plastic waste washing up on the shores of the Galapagos islands. Microparticles or tiny plastic pieces have ended up in the stomachs of species found only in the Galapagos, which is 1,000 kilometers west of mainland Ecuador. The animals include iguanas, tortoises, birds and fish. More than 90 percent of the waste comes from South America, Central America and even Asian fishing fleets. Already this year, eight tons of waste has been collected. Authorities hope to appeal to our global conscience to not throw waste into the sea.
