Hong Kong plans to spend an eye-watering $79 billion on one of the world's largest artificial islands with the aim of combating its housing shortage. The project would reclaim 1,000 heactares of land around Lantau Island starting in 2025 with a move-in date of 2032. The artificial island will be the city's most expensive infrastructure project and will be nearly three times the size of New York's Central Park. It will provide up to 260,000 housing units of which over 70 percent will be dedicated for public housing. But critics say the vast project would damage the environment and is being conducted with very little transparency.
