The Iranian government has created a so-called halal net, a state-controlled version of the internet aimed at restricting anti-government sentiment and countering information warfare. Known as the National Information Network, one characteristic of this halal-net is that it has some 500 government-approved national websites that stream content far faster than those based abroad, which are deliberately slowed down.
