A Hong Kong court recently found nine leaders of 2014 pro-democracy demonstrations guilty on charges of public nuisance. The decision has been called a "crushing blow for freedom of expression and peaceful protest" in Hong Kong. Hong Kong's biggest public protest in recent years, the so-called umbrella movement, laid siege to government buildings and paralyzed Hong Kong's financial district for 79 days. The movement eventually fizzled out failing to win concessions for free elections from the Hong Kong government.
