The OECD has ranked Korea as one of the countries with the worst air pollution in the world. Average ultrafine dust levels or PM 2.5 was the highest in India followed by China, Vietnam, Korea and South Africa. Korea's heavy reliance on coal power was pinpointed as a major cause of ultrafine dust. Moreover, the problem is expected to get worse as Korea and China both plan to invest heavily in coal power plants. Korea relies on coal for about 46 percent of its energy, which is higher than the OECD average of 27 percent. China announced it would reduce its dependence on coal from 67 percent to 55 percent. But skeptics question whether that's possible given China's plan to build 460 additional coal power plants in the next three years.
