Marriages in South Korea have become nearly as rare as they were in the poverty-stricken days of the 1970s. According to government data from 2018, the country’s crude marriage rate stood at 5.0 last year, the lowest figure since 1970. Last year, just over 257,000 couples tied the knot, down 2.6 percent from a year ago. It's the seven straight year of decline since 2012. The government attributes the overall drop in marriages to demographic and economic factors, as well as a change in social mores.
