Korea's first overseas naval unit is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The Cheonghae Unit was launched on March 13, 2009 for anti-piracy operations off the Somali coast. Since then, it has become a symbol of South Korea's steady contribution to global peace and safety. The 300-person unit has provided support for the safety of nearly 22,000 vessels and has countered 21 pirate attacks. The defense ministry says the unit raised Korea's national standing. The contingent is comprised of a 4,400-ton destroyer with service members deployed on a six-month rotational basis. It is best known for its 2011 rescue of Korea's Samho Jewelry freighter from Somali pirates.
