Over in Southern California, the National Weather Service reported more than 1,200 lightning bursts in a five minute period. In total, over 2,200 instances of lightning popped up across Southern California. They were all caused by a powerful thunderstorm that swept over the region. There were no reports of anyone being hit.

A strong batch of thunderstorms created "lightning storms" prompted residents to be alerted and take caution. Meteorologists say the jet stream is coming further south and is pushing copious amounts of moisture into the area. Researchers report it's unusual for Southern California and that lightning typically hits deserts during the summer monsoon season.
