Korea’s construction companies are urging the government to come up with supplementary measures following revisions to the Labor Standards Act to reduce working hours.
Construction industry insiders claim that cutting the maximum number of hours worked per week from 68 to 52 will lead to problems in quality and safety at construction sites.
Nine of Korea’s major construction companies were found to have had their workers work more than 61 hours in 2012.
The average number of hours worked at overseas construction sites exceeded 67 hours.
As such, there are calls for work hours to be applied differently according to the size of construction sites.
